Farm work isn't glamorous. It's hot, dusty, and physically demanding. But it's also a rite of passage that earns you a second year in paradise. This guide covers the real stuff influencers won't tell you.
The Essential Packing List
Clothing (The "You Will Ruin These" Pile)
- Wide-brimmed Hat: Not a baseball cap. You need neck protection.
- Long-sleeve Shirts: Lightweight cotton/linen. Protects from sun and scratches.
- Work Boots: Steel-capped preferred. Blundstones are the gold standard.
- High-vis Vest: Many farms require them (and charge you if you don't have one).
Gear & Supplies
- Water Bottle (4L+): Yes, 4 Liters. You will drink it all by 2pm.
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+): Apply every 2 hours. The Aussie sun is no joke.
- Gloves: Several pairs. Protects from spiders, thorns, and blisters.
- Portable Speaker: Essential for morale during 8-hour picking shifts.
How Not to Die (Seriously)
Heat Stroke
If you stop sweating, feel dizzy, or get a headache, STOP immediately. Heat stroke kills backpackers every year.
Rule: Pee clear. If it's dark yellow, drink more.
Snakes & Spiders
Assume every pile of leaves or wood has a snake in it. Check your boots before putting them on.
Rule: Don't touch what you can't see.
Chemicals
Farms use strong pesticides. Wash your hands before eating. Shower immediately after work.
Rule: Wash fruit before eating it.
Red Flags: Avoid These Farms
"Pay for your spot"
Never pay a deposit to secure a job. It's 100% a scam.
Cash in Hand
Illegal. No payslips = No visa days. You work for free (visa-wise).
Extortionate Rent
If rent is $250/week for a bunk bed in a shed, leave.
Withholding Passport
Illegal. If they ask for your passport "for safekeeping", run.
Know Your Rights
Minimum Wage (2025)
For casual employees (which you likely are), the minimum wage is approximately $29.04 per hour (includes 25% casual loading).
If you are on Piece Rate (paid by the bucket), you must still earn a minimum floor rate. You cannot be paid $5/hour just because you are slow.
